The official opening of the school was carried out by Her Majesty the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, son of the late Sultan Zainal Abidin on 5 September 1979. On 18 September 1982 the school changed its name to the School of Kuala Terengganu Sultan Mahmud ceremony which officially opened by HRH Prince Sultan Mahmud Shah Ibni Al Muktafi Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah. In 1995 the school was again given a new name, School of Science, Sultan Mahmud (Sesma), Kuala Terengganu is a description of the importance of science subjects in the school curriculum today.
The first principal was Mr. Muhammad Bin Hj Mustaffa while Mr. Johari Shamsuddin as Senior Assistant. Pilot group of students about 109 people comprising 51 men and 58 women, with 5 males and 2 females. In 1978 the first intake of students' matriculation classes about 90 people organized by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was held. Nesma first entered the digital era when becoming one of the Smart School under the development plan of the Ministry of Education in 1999.
Students in Sesma follow the lessons in several genres. Upper Secondary level only science stream provided. Starting from 1989 subjects living skills introduced to replace the industrial arts education and domestic science. Computer class students are required to form one to four. Subjects French first introduced in 1996 to lower secondary students while in Japan in 1997.
Teaching and learning facilities are adequate. In addition to the science lab, life skills workshops, a library ERT and there are additional facilities such as language laboratories, computer rooms, laboratories and Multimedia Resource Centre. From time to time the school will add these facilities for the benefit of students.
